Woke up early this morning to take some new year sunrise photos. Went to both ends of my little home town -- the farm land to the Southwest and the lake to the North.

I did this using some HDRI techniques I've recently learned and 5 images. I ran into some trouble with some odd coloration in the clouds and don't know really how to fix it. If anyone has any suggestions I'd be glad to hear them.

Lima, Peru on the first or second day oh, so many months ago. As long as I continue to fail in my miserable attempts at finding a firm who is actually hiring, I may be headed to the Dominican next month for a few days (or weeks).

That should prove to be quite an experience. I have a hunch it'll be a little different from Lima.

A year older and a year brighter.

He turned 4 this year and is quite smart (though he did proclaim to us all that the Power Rangers were more powerful than even God).

I tried something a little different on this photo (though perhaps it wasn't the best comp with which to try it). But his eyues just looked so great with the white-out treatment that I had to post it. Even in real life they're rather large and bright.

The requisite brothers-three portrait for the Christmas card. Mum doesn't like to be in them I suppose.

My grandfather has this great silver-grey siding on his garage and with all three of us wearing black coats and black scarves it made a perfect backdrop. Of course, my brothers' red hair and red beards make for a pretty cool splash of color too. And then the snow, though unwanted isn't too much of a distraction (except for that one streak right on my right eye). Kind of cool in fact. The almost two feet of snow at our feet however made for a really dramatic reflection from below so I decided on a low angle to make some good use of it; otherwise, I think it would've looked all wrong, so I suppose you sometimes take the angle that's given to you.

Hope all y'alls Thanksgiving weekend was splendid.

It's cold and bleary here in Ohio. And though Thanksgiving is approaching and that means wonderful things, I'm kind of missing Virginia these days. For one thing it's a lot prettier there (see photo). But, I had no reason to stay. So I'm here in Ohio.

Reflections on a train

This is on the train from Ollantaytambo to Machu Picchu.

The train is owned by a British rail company. This means that very little of the revenue becomes invested in the Sacred Valley region. And though it's used by both tourists (three routes each way, daily), the local Peruvians also must use the rail on a daily basis. (Tickets for American and European passport holders are in the neighborhood of $50 while Peruvians pay about 25 cents. I documented the farmers' arrival in the city one morning here.)

The British rail company, in association with regional planning authorities are currently working out an initiative that would discontinue operation of Peru Rail from Cusco to Ollantaytambo and reserve its use only for tourists. This, quite obviously, would have an adverse affect on the locals who rely on it to get their products to both tourist markets and local markets.

Cusco, Peru.

I had some extra time one afternoon so I decided to climb the hills surrounding the city and see what I could find. After an hour or so of climbing the steep city steps this is what I came to. I was, quite literally, at the peak of the city. The narrow steps ended at my feet and perhaps a few feet higher were a few trees and then skies above (this is taken from maybe a dozen steps down). Storm clouds were rolling in (oh, did it rain that night) but the sun was still shining, illuminating the city below. Oh, so magnificent.

On the way up it became more and more obvious how the city had begun to develop itself as a tourist-centric location. Not too soon after climbing beyond the Plaza de Armas the streets became narrower and narrower. Few cars, busses and European pedestrians criss-crossed the streets. Restaurants and shops began to be replaced by house after house after house. Interestingly, the vernacular remained very much untouched throughout the city, unlike Lima where 'modern' concrete construction clashed with early Spanish. As seen here however, there is some new CMU construction but mostly that's merely a material 'upgrade' from adobe brick. It was amazing to see how tightly integrated the city was in the hillside.

In the link above you can see a small clump of trees Northeast of the Plaza De Armas. Further Northeast, on the edge of the city, is where this photo was taken, looking east. This only has a mild curve set on it. There's very little I could do to make this look any more fantastic than it was in reality (I hope you all think the same).

Aguas Calientes, Peru (at the base of Machu Picchu).

Walking the streets of Aguas Calientes, the streets are filled with bright colors and cheerful signs, welcoming the tourists into bars and pool halls ("Pisco Sour! 3 for 1 Deal!"). On the back sides however are the true living conditions of the city. Most of the bars and restaurants, souvenir shops and supply stores, are owned not by those living in Aguas. In fact, most aren't even owned by Peruvians. Instead, most live off of very little in tin-roofed concrete brick structures tucked behind the shiny facades. This isn't to say they should be pitied but it does raise many questions about the impacts of rampant tourism on native cultures. And when this has been happening for several generations, what defines 'native culture'.

This is from deep in the archives. Back from my trip to Peru in March. I was rather lucky to have found a spot where there were no people around (the place was absolutely filled). It was rather rainy that day (it started coming down pretty nice on our 45 minute hike down from Waynu Picchu to the north (that big peak you always see in the classic Machu photos). And let me tell you, it is a lot easier getting down than going up. I'm sure there are a few of you out there who have been and know exactly what I'm talking about. The rain made it all very interesting since everything got wet rather quickly and made it a little miserable. But it was relatively warm so it wasn't too bad. The camera didn't make it out much because of the rain but when it did, the clouds made it pretty cool (and very different from the standard tourist board photos). moody.

Getty Center, LA.

I had a little fun with the developing of this image. It had been sitting in Lightroom as a full color image but after awhile I decided it had the potential to look a little better as a black and white. But it's not the typical high-contrast black and white with a little vintage vignette. I played around much more with the curves to get something that looked like it came out of a basement dark room in the 60s. I might start using this more often.

Recently I've been visiting Bardamu Photography (Eyes Wide Open) and the amazing black and white film photography posted there (well, some of it is digital).

Yep. This is a shameless addition to the blog so that I can post on this week's VFXY challenge.

I grew up with this creek not too far from my back yard. I learned how to use a camera while wandering its winding path, photographing all the flora, weed-life and slowly, trickling water. Most of the year it's dried-up but when our little lake-side town gets a good rain shower it springs back to life.

I usually would shoot with a polarizer on my ultra-wide (crazy effects at 10mm) but the reflections of the trees, the shallow water, the yellow and orange leaves made for a really cool and complex layered look.

I'm going even more abstract with this one. Way more than the previous few. This was on the way back down the hill (ph, yeah, it's still the Getty Center) since we hadn't taken the tram and in the 10 minutes or so it took us to walk down something must have happened 'cause I ended up with a whole bunch of pictures of weird, no-subject stuff like this. Maybe there were toxins in the air or something--there was that hill-fire a week or so ago...

Anyway, I suppose this is just a little silliness for today.

Suburban skyline

The endless suburban skyline rears its ugly head along 110 in Los Angeles.

I was shooting a bunch of images of along the highway as we drove back to Costa Mesa from downtown LA one day and thought that this site was just too spectactular to pass up. There's a significant amount of toning, obviously, but it's not only the brilliant clear sky standing against the three powerline towers, but the horizon below where you continue to see the grid extend to the distant and faded mountains.

I had been shooting in very low-light levels all morning and in my haste to pull out my camera on the drive back had forgotten to lower the ISO. The D200 has such a beautiful grainy-style noise and when you see it here it's almost appropriate in its gritty (no pun intended) irony. I wish I had been able to get closer. Maybe I'll do an image series on subrubia. It's always been an incredibly interestig academic topic for me, why not make it artistic.

One of the interior staircases of Richard Meier's Getty Center in Los Angeles. It was quite amazing. Any way you turned the camera you could create striking and dynamic compositions. Meier definately knew what he was doing.

I was only there for a few hours and visited the two photography exhibits that had just opened. And wandered in the garden designed by Olin Partnership (amongst others). I'll put some more up in the next couple of days just for kicks.

If only graduation had been on a day this beautiful. But while it rained a bit the day after this was taken (just before the ceremony really) it was a good enough day anyway.

There were a number of us photographers out on this particularly nice day. We kind of stalked each other with our oversized-cameras while the students and parents lazied about with their point-and-shoots. I bet theirs are probably better than mine.

Well, I graduated on Sunday. It's strange to think that for most of my life I worked toward getting IN to college and enjoying the academia of it all (yeah, I was a nerd--still am). Now that I'm 'out' I'm not sure what to do with myself. Oh, so strange.

The School of Architecture hosted an opening yesterday for the Robotic Ecologies seminar led by Jason Johnson. I have to say, it wasn't as spectacular as last year's opening when we introduced the school for the first time to emergent technologies in robotics and architecture (I'm the most modest person I know) but it still had some pretty cool things happening.

This particular "machine" used proximity sensors to set off an array of LEDs and trigger a sound field while manipulating a wave-type surface.

This one was taken awhile ago. I had just bought the vertical grip for my D200 so I jumped over to a jam session of my friends' to take it for a spin. It was pretty dark so the AF was having some trouble but I liked this one.

I had previously decided that I wasn't goig to blog unless I had taken a photo that day. But with architecture classes taking up so much time I got a little bored. In testing out Lightroom 2.0 (two words: multiple monitors) I decided I'd post anyway.

Ryan's been on here before. But it really wasn't a good look (no pun intended).

This is from a little get together that we had as 4th-year students at the school of architecture. I thought I'd take my D200 and a 50mm lens along with me. A few people were a little weirded out by its size (as opposed to a point-and-shoot I suppose) but I was glad I had it.

I edited it on one screen and now that I look on another one I'm not too happy with it. I guess there's no way to calibrate everyone to my preferences.

Well, this one may not be everyone's cup o' tea, but then again, it's not a photo of a cup o' tea. It's a bit busy but I like it for the sort of figure-ground reversal that the flowers create. Up in the trees they're a nice bright white against a darker background. Then at the bottom of the photo the shadows create a dark figure against the light concrete. In neither half can you really tell what is the figure and what is the ground. Kind of nerdy assessment here...

It's that time of year again. The flowers are blooming, the birds and chirping, skies are turning blue...

And the High Schoolers are invading the University of Virginia looking for a reason to come here rather than Virginia Tech. Honestly, there's no reason to not come here. But they come anyway. In hoards. Usually with one of both parents. That makes for a dozen groups of 50 students and parents wandering Grounds. Good moments.

I also snagged a ton of photos of the magnolias outside some of the University buildings. I'll be sure to share tomorrow.

Something simple today.

I promise you that I didn't make this photo up. This really is what the skies in Peru look like. A wee-bit of help from a polarizer but that's it. It's amazing what happens when you get down to the equator.

Unfortunately, I don't have a very high-res version as I was making a montage when I took this photo. When I construct montages I take 2.5MP jpegs instead of 10.1MP RAW images. Bummer.

UPDATE: I realized, now, that this was taken with my 50mm lens...which I don't have a polarizer for...So this is as real as it gets folks.

Part of our travels to Peru involved a discussion (ongoing as it were) about native culture, developed culture, influx culture, American culture, and all of the sundry other subtleties of a globalizing world. SOme have taken the stance that all culture not native to a region is bad. Others are of the opinion that development, whether 'native' or 'imported' is a natural progression of a globalizing society.

And so here we have Coke. In Lima, Peru. Bottled in South America. 'Invented' in the United States. Is its proliferation acceptable? Is it more valid in 'highly developed' Europe (say, Italy) than it is at the base of Machu Picchu (some in our discussions have assumed this stance to be true)? What culture/society/history/preservation is 'correct' and what is to be wiped from a place? Who decides? The academics or the people living in that world? Is tourism bad? Is tourism good?

I should also point out that my friend was photographing a beautiful specimen of a 1960s Dodge at this very moment. How 'bout that?

In any case, I really like this photo. It's one of my favorites from the trip. I almost feel like I could see this in National Geographic (if I'm completely off here, please tell me!).

A couple of kids from Ollantaytambo. So much fun. They hung out with us for a bit while we waited for the mayor to meet us (he was several hours late). They loved to have their photo taken (though perhaps more, they loved to see themselves in the tiny preview screen), play on the big front loader parked on the square (until it roared to life at which point they totally freaked out) and sketch in all of our sketchbooks. These two were 5 and 10. They had a younger sister, aged 4 if I remember.

Ollantaytambo is the last city in the Cusco valley before entering fully into the Andes and Machu Picchu. Like Cusco, it was an Incan city and famous for Manco Inca's victory against the Spanish. A river and this tributary bound it in the south and to the west.

Well, I returned from Peru last night at 2:00/3:00 in the morning. Three days in Lima, two in Ollantaytambo, one in Cusco and then, thanks to an overbooked flight, one in El Salvador (where I hit the beautiful beaches).

An amazing trip, with so much done and so much more we could've done. Eleven students and our professor in a few meetings, much analysis (drawing, photography, video, sketching, photography, sketching, photography, photography) and almost as much fun and adventure. If you even get a chance to go to Peru, you will not be disappointed. Lima's hot, Cusco cool, Ollantaytambo just perfect in all respects.

There will be many photos to come. I currently only have 4GB of 16GB but I'll get the early stuff by tomorrow. There's a good chance you'll never see another photo from Denmark. Lucky you.

Taken from the tower of Arne Jacobsen's Aarhus Rådhus (City Hall of Aarhus, Denmark). It's a big harbor city, the gateway to the Atlantic. Being architecture students we were allowed up to the bell tower on special circumstances. The problem was, we got up there at about 11:50. Ten minutes before the [very large] bells rang. It was a bit windy so I had set my sketchbook down to take photos of the city. As I bent down to grab my bag (being the last one to come down) the bells rang noon. And by 'rang' I mean beat the living dayloghts out of my ear-drums. This caused me to forget my sketchbook whch remained on the tower until 45 minutes later when I grabbed for it in Aros Museum a couple kilometers away. So, back I ran. Up, up up with a Danish security guard. I lost out on lunch because of that, too.

A pier jutting out into the defensive canals on Amager in Copenhagen. Maybe 'moat' is a better term. I really under-exposed this one to get the detail in the (highly reflective) water and clouds so it may not look very good on some monitors, being as dark as it is. Let me know what you think. I had just seen this photo on headphoneland.com. Or at least remembered it while taking a few of these from around one of my favorite areas of Copenhagen. You can Google map the pier.

I'll be going to Peru for a week starting next Friday and will (obviously) be taking the camera with a new piece of fun: a GPS unit. So when I get back all of my photos will be geo-referenced. Snazzy. Pixy doesn't support geo-referencing in its meta-data, but flickr does. I'll let you all know when they're up and running.

Charlottesville was bitterly cold today. The camer sits under my desk again. My hands (and fingers) like to stay warm. I'll get some photos up from around town soon. I promise. Really, I do. When everyone was posting from the lunar eclipse I decided I needed to put more recent stuff up. I just like all of my Danish photography so much. The longing for my mistress upon returning home. Or something like that.

Just after the rain stopped. The Royal Palace grounds: Amalienborg Slot, Copenhagen, Denmark.

A decent amount of manipulaiton to get that sky and the facade to look like that (the sky is real and was definately that dramatic but I wanted to show the facade too which was the difficult part). Like it or don't. Let me know.

Christiansborg Slot, Danish Parliament. The tower was under restoration for the entire time I was in Denmark. Made for this very intersting modernist aesthetic amidst the pristine towers of Copenhagen (Danes take great pride in their flat city, pocked with spiraling towers of all sorts and forms). I'm not sure the Danes liked it quite as much as I did. Too bad.

View through one of the plexi windows at the Prismen, a youth recreation center in Copenhagen. The brick is from an existing housing block that the plexi shell (steel and glu-lam structure) was attached to. The main space is a recycled rubber floor--green in color--that is manipulated to form seating "hills" for spectators. Very cool place.

Royal Danish Playhouse

Last night was the opening of my favorite building in Denmark, the brand new Royal Danish Playhouse by Lundgaard Tranberg. And of course, the opening performance was Hamlet, the fabled prince of Denmark whose kingdom was supposed to be just north of Copenhagen at Helsingør.

The photo was taken from the Opera across the harbor. There's a similar concept in the design, being right on the water and opening the stage to the harbor. However, the Opera does a terrible job of actually articulating that while the Royal Playhouse does so brilliantly with a wonderful array of materials and spaces. It's, quite frankly, just a wonderful building.

Forgot about this one. I was quite ecstatic when I took it, thinking 'oh, sweet, this'll be a great post--its legible (literally) and a bit fun and people can guess what happened in this little Irish shindig-of-a-place'. The hours upon hours of sleeping after coming back to Copenhagen from my trip to the Isles meant that I forgot about a lot of things.

I also love the white camera pointed down at the entrance/fire escape/facade. Omnipotent. How metaphorical.

One of a long row of buildings in at the Royal Academy of Arts in Copenhagen. This particular building was the home of a prominent architecture firm (I believe they were part of the Metro design team) before it burned out. Some of these buildings also house portions of the film school if I'm not mistaken.

This one is from all the way back to August on the day I arrived in Denmark. I'm enjoying the chance to go back and look at all of my old[er] photos and pick some out that haven't been played with.

This one started off with a bit of a cold tone in Lightroom's presets. But other than that, there's nothing really added--a tad bit of vignetting for that classy feel. Like?

Some Peruvian textiles that we've been studying for a school project in Lima.

The camera is stored safely under my desk. This is step one in forcing myself to take time away from studio. Unfortunately, as you can see here, it hasn't really made it outside of the a-school.

While doing some study at Hammarby Sjöstad (a new 'green' development along an industrial site in Stockholm) we came across a flock (is it a flock) of swan paddling their way through the canals and lakes. Nobody could understand why I was so fascinated with them. I probably took nearly 50 photos (and then deleted a lot to make room for other things).

Copenhagen's Tiger (think Target meets The Dollar Store) is the best place in the world to check out some weird (and really cheap) stuff.

This particular evening they had a live band and free beer circulating through the two-floor space. It was pretty packed. And pretty amazing.

For any architect out there who is familiar with Bagsværd Church by Jørn Utzon. Well, i'm here to tell you that it's pretty much a disappointment. Heralded for it's billowing, cloud-like ceiling and strong sense of light, it falls flat flat on it's face.

Until you walk beyond the sanctuary. Then it gets interesting.
